Really.

Okay, not just lucky. I've made some successful choices, and I've sacrificed a few things to be where I am: financially stable, doing a job I like (technical writing), having an avocation (fiction writing) that I LOVE, a spouse who supports my efforts, and a family who is proud of me.

Most especially I'm happy about my health. I've committed myself to excercising as much as I can, I try to eat right, etc. In short: I'm doing the best I know how. Yes, I could get more aggressive about losing that pesky 20 pounds I gained when I quit smoking years ago, but hey, I'm not giving up my one ice cream splurge a week. If that means I keep the weight on, so be it.

Why these deep thoughts on a Monday? I went to the State Fair over the weekend and had a chance to view an amazing cross-section of humanity. I also got email from a friend who's battling stage 4 cancer. All combined to remind me: This is Life. It's not a Rehearsal. Enjoy it while you can -- you may become disabled, or worse. Do what you love and enjoy your life ... this is your time and use it well.

<msn:type>blogentry</msn:type><live:type>blogentry</live:type><live:typelabel>Blog entry</live:typelabel>

<dcterms:modified>2008-08-25T10:58:39Z</dcterms:modified>

Success: how to define it?

Someone suggested that my tagline for my latest book ("Undercover FBI agent vs. Midwest Mom: Mom wins") would be a great idea for a movie -- of course, I'm not sure about that. My books are a bit unconventional to say the least, so I'm not sure Hollywood is ready for older heroes and heroines in a tiny town in the Midwest who battle treason and suspicion.

This person suggested I have my agent shop the movie rights. Ha! I don't have an agent. I've never even looked for an agent. I considered it once, but haven't bothered. I'm selling plenty of books without one, so ....

I wonder if I should be pursuing more success, though. I'm comfortable with my publishers -- all small press, all supportive, and all with editors I appreciate (and who appreciate me). Should I dip my toe back in the Query Letter water and seek out a bigger publisher or a bigger audience? Or be happy to be where I am?

Questions, questions, for a Monday .... I think I'll put them on my To Do list and consider them later. Right now I have a new release to promote and another book to write.

<msn:type>blogentry</msn:type><live:type>blogentry</live:type><live:typelabel>Blog entry</live:typelabel>

<dcterms:modified>2008-08-18T10:27:31Z</dcterms:modified>

Another release !!!

This is my third release this year. One more to go, and I'llbe done for the year for new releases. All that will remain are the print releases of previously released books.

It's an exhausting process, but not as much as it used to be. I'm getting to be an old hand at this now, or so I think. I no longer pop onto every loop and post excerpts, I don't blog constantly about the new book, and I don't get into that frenzied BUY BUY BUY mentality. I'm in this for the long haul and the fact that I write for small press means my books are always available. There's no such thing as 'a second print run'.

I'm finding I like being an e-author. I don't have the concerns or qualms other authors have. My editors love my work, I can write as much or as little as I want, and sales aren't an indicator of whether I'll get another contract. It's pretty low stress, really.

Maybe I've finally found my niche? We'll see. This is only my second year in the business, and I'm sure I've still got a TON to learn.

Here's the obligatory release info:

Brilliant Disguise, available from Resplendence Publishing (http://www.resplendencepublishing.com). I don't have the direct buy link yet but I'll post it soon.

Here's the blurb:

Nick Baxter, an undercover FBI agent, thinks his BRILLIANT DISGUISE will fool the hicks in New Providence, Iowa. They won't suspect he's there investigating widow Shannon Delgardie, under suspicion of treason. What Nick doesn't know is that everybody in town is conspiring to protect her and investigate him in return.

Shannon needs help. The men her late husband blackmailed are closing in and the FBI might be involved. When Nick approaches her, can she trust him? With the aid of computer hackers and hair stylists, she uncovers the truth, finding a love she never expected in a tiny Iowa town.

Fun book -- hope you enjoy it!

<msn:type>blogentry</msn:type><live:type>blogentry</live:type><live:typelabel>Blog entry</live:typelabel>

<dcterms:modified>2008-08-11T10:38:57Z</dcterms:modified>

How do you handle writing ... which isn't just writing?

I'm thinking, once again, about promotion. The "P" word is one that has haunted me since I started selling books. I really dislike promotions. I dislike thinking about it, analyzing it, and trying to figure out what to do. It's like a big black cloud hanging over my head.

I realize I have to do promotions in order to get people to read my books. I'm not with a big publisher and thus, most of the promotion stuff lands on me. I'm not griping about that -- my publishers are all great and I'm pleased with the final product for the most part. But I just wish I could hand off the promotion to someone else.

The problem is, I write e-books that come out in print a few months later. That means I have to do 2 rounds of promo for a book and 2 different types of promo to 2 different audiences. And because I'm with a small press, my books are ALWAYS available. A year, two, three years from now-- you can still buy my books. So I'm doing promo for my back list as well as for the recent release. When you release 4 books a year like I do, it gets ... tedious.

I'm toying with the idea of hiring someone to help me with promotion. I don't want someone to do drive-by promo on assorted loops, etc. I'd like someone to help me figure out how to DO promo. I've taken assorted online workshops about to become a promo guru myself, but that's not what I'm looking for. I need someone to take the responsibilty and say, "you should be doing this here and now" or "I'll do this for you, send me X and I'll make sure it gets to the right people."

Note I said 'toying' with the idea. I'm not sure (1) such a group exists or (2) I could afford it.

But it's a nice fantasy for me to have as I gear up for a month of promo on a new release (Aug. 12) and a print release of an older book (Aug. 27).

Sigh.....

<msn:type>blogentry</msn:type><live:type>blogentry</live:type><live:typelabel>Blog entry</live:typelabel>

<dcterms:modified>2008-07-28T22:48:13Z</dcterms:modified>

Here we go again -- double releases

Be careful what you wish for, it might come true ...

My next release is August 12. Then I'll have a November 7 release. Then a November 11 release. And possibly another November release. And a December release.

Okay, maybe some don't 'count' -- they're print versions of previously released e-books. But I still need to do promo for 'em. And make sure all my assorted Lists, Loops, and Spots are updated.

And of course, now that the books are releasing, my editors want the 'next' book.

Yikes! I need to get cracking and quit blogging!

<msn:type>blogentry</msn:type><live:type>blogentry</live:type><live:typelabel>Blog entry</live:typelabel>

<dcterms:modified>2008-07-14T23:48:27Z</dcterms:modified>

Another month, another release

Well, almost a release.

I was due to have a book come out today, but it's been delayed. I'm not sure when it'll release -- hopefully in August. I'm not sweating it, though. Better to have all Tees crossed and Eyes dotted, right?

I'm still busy writing and doing promo -- yikes, where does the time go? I've cut back on the number of loops where I'm active and I'm trying to focus on spots where I think it will do the most good. We'll see -- it's all so hit and miss, isnt' it?

Have to go finish the latest WIP -- I'm still enjoying the whole Process and as long as it's fun, I'll keep slugging away.

Happy summer!

<msn:type>blogentry</msn:type><live:type>blogentry</live:type><live:typelabel>Blog entry</live:typelabel>

<dcterms:modified>2008-07-01T10:29:46Z</dcterms:modified>

Another month, another release

My "Murder at the National Conference" book is out and I've been busily pimping it all around the Web.

Actually, I haven't. I try to do one promo a day. I'm going to do one a day for a month or so, then drop the promo for a while and re-visit it when the next book in the series comes out. I've found that I dislike seeing SO much promo for one book on every loop I visit. It gets sort of ... shrill after a while. So I'm trying to be circumspect about it and take it somewhat easy.

Of course, life has gotten in the way and has forced me to be circumspect. I've had to make a lot of out of town trips lately (visits to family, death in the family, etc.). Now I may have to leave town again because my mother is caught in a town that's flooded and she may need to be evacuated. I don't mind the trip, but I just wish we knew what the right thing to do was ... leave or stay? Wait and hope for power to come back on? Or leave and assume the worse?

No answers tonight. Maybe in the morning ... until then, I'll go out and do my little post for my book.

Oh. Wait. I think this counts. Go out and buy Autographs, Abductions, and A-List Authors! From HERE.

Okay. That's done. Whew. I can relax for the rest of the night....

<msn:type>blogentry</msn:type><live:type>blogentry</live:type><live:typelabel>Blog entry</live:typelabel>

<dcterms:modified>2008-06-11T23:56:02Z</dcterms:modified>

I lurve holidays

I'm using this holiday weekend to get caught up on so much. I've seen a movie I wanted to see (Indiana Jones), I got the garden as done as I want to at this point in time, I sat down and thought about Things (promotion, mainly), and I've been writing like a fiend.

Holidays are happy days, indeed.

<msn:type>blogentry</msn:type><live:type>blogentry</live:type><live:typelabel>Blog entry</live:typelabel>

<dcterms:modified>2008-05-26T11:54:37Z</dcterms:modified>

On the road again

I'll be heading out soon to go to another conference. At least this time we'll be driving (I'm going with friends), so I don't have the airport headaches.

This might be my last conference for the year, and I have to admit, I'm looking forward to staying in town in July and missing RWA's National Conference. I've gone every year for the last 4 years, and each year I've gotten less and less out of it, I think. So I'm glad I'm taking a year or two off. Maybe I'll re-gather some enthusiasm for it if I take a break.

I think 'stepping back' like that is useful for a lot of things. It's just a matter of figuring out when to step back and when to continue. Case in point: I've been mucking around with a promo thingie (little chapter books) and I FINALLY got it to work, then I decided to tweak it, and by the time I got done tweaking, yikes, I'd spent most of a day on it.

Time to step back and look at it. Yep, I let it sit for a few days and I went back to my original design: easier to maintain, simple to implement, inexpensive. The other alternative really wasn't all that much better.

So I'll use this weekend to step away from work and other things and maybe get my head back into the conference scene, where I can network, hang out with people, and learn some things. That's what conferences are for, right -- forget the Party Conference I just attended. I'd like to go to one and learn.

Fingers crossed ....

<msn:type>blogentry</msn:type><live:type>blogentry</live:type><live:typelabel>Blog entry</live:typelabel>

<dcterms:modified>2008-05-13T01:48:08Z</dcterms:modified>

What's the difference between a "Live" space and ...

Some friends and I are talking about blogging, MySpace, and where to expend promotion efforts.

I content that touching my MySpace page once a day or so is no biggie, and may pay off. Others think that just keeping a space alive by accessing it now and again and not being active daily on it (sending out announcements, etc.) is a waste of time.

To be honest, all of my promo efforts might be a waste of time. Unless I get national coverage or win an award, or get my name in the local paper, who knows if anything will pay off?

My feeling is this: do what I can, do what fits into my schedule, and do what I can afford, and see how it all shakes out. My main motto about all of my writing endeavors has been: "As long as it's still fun and doesn't interfere with my real life, I'll do it."

Based on that, then yes, keeping a MySpace page, etc., makes sense. That's the nifty thing about this business -- everyone approaches it in a different way and I'm trying to learn from 'em all.

<msn:type>blogentry</msn:type><live:type>blogentry</live:type><live:typelabel>Blog entry</live:typelabel>

<dcterms:modified>2008-05-05T12:02:26Z</dcterms:modified>

RT Survior

I went to my first RT conference last week, and what an experience!

For those of you who don't know about it, "RT" is the Romantic Times Book Lovers Convention, where authors meet readers (and cover models and agents and editors). There's about a thousand people all jammed together chatting, talking, laughing -- all at once.

It was a bit overwhelming but I'm glad I went, especially since it was held in Pittsburgh and I used to live there. I had lunch with an old friend, my husband and I saw the family briefly, and all in all, a good time was had. It's a real experience, and one I'm glad I had. Not sure I want to repeat it again next year, but perhaps the year after that might be fun.

What did I learn from it? I'm not quite sure yet. Right now, it was mainly a social event for me, a chance to put faces to names of all those folks I've exchanged emails with off and on for a year or more. It solidified my feeling that mainstream e-books have a tough time in the market while erotica continues to be THE hot ticket. But I don't want to write erotica, so I guess I'll soldier on with my books and hope for the best.

I'm a bit tired from it all, but glad I did it. Now back to the real world.

<msn:type>blogentry</msn:type><live:type>blogentry</live:type><live:typelabel>Blog entry</live:typelabel>

<dcterms:modified>2008-04-21T11:22:01Z</dcterms:modified>

No time to blog!

I'm in the middle of a dozen different things -- signed with a new publisher, got new covers for an upcoming book, designing banners for a June book, remodeling the house (which means I'm in a bare room with just my computer balanced on my lap), sick cat (recovering now), work deadlines ...

In addition to being a mother, domestic goddess, and author, she also quilts and drinks a lot of wine to distract herself from her Girl Scout Thin Mint cookie addiction. Her third book ALL THE WAY HOME with Cerridwen Press is coming in March 2008.

Here's what Jen says about Here to Stay, her current release with Cerridwen:

I wrote Here to Stay after a visit to Asbury Park, New Jersey in March. The weather was so cold and bleak and the houses along the shore looked so forlorn and decrepit, I couldn't help but write a story to go with the surroundings. I've always loved to look at old houses and think about how I'd like to fix them up but this was the first time I was inspired to write an entire novel!

Here's the blurb for Here to Stay:

All Julia Sullivan wanted was a fresh start in a new place. But she was finding out that cutting ties with the past and starting over can be a difficult thing to do.

After leaving her husband and quitting her job, Julia was emotionally spent. She needed a quiet place to recharge and to think about what she wanted from life. She thought she had found just that when she inherited her aunt's oceanfront Victorian house in Haven, New Jersey. It wasn't going to be that simple, however. In addition to her new house being a complete shambles, her charming soon-to-be ex-husband Patrick, whom she discovers she still loves, arrives with the intention of winning her back.

To complicate matters further, it seems as if her aunt's death wasn't an accident after all. And there's just something about her new house that seems to interest all sorts of people.

D. Hansen-Hill was the author of 25 fantasy, science fiction, and horror novels until a year ago. That's when she began writing romances under the pseudonym Melody Knight. Melody now has five romantic suspense, sf romance, and sf fantasy novels to her credit, and—more recently—2 erotic novellas. Whether horror novel or erotic novella, all ND's books are suspenseful.

When she's not writing, ND oil paints, and now has work in 8 countries. She's also studying archeology, with the goal of qualifying by the end of next year to do contract archeology throughout the Pacific rim.

Her books are published widely, with 26 published or contracted by Five Star, Linden Bay Romance, Fictionwise, Drollerie Press, Red Rose Publishing, and Cerridwen Press. Here's where you can find her:

http://www.NDHansen-Hill.com
http://MelodyKnight.com

http://www.myspace.com/ndmanuscripts

And here's a blurb for her latest Melody Knight book, In Flames:

Lady Sophia Donovan has everything a woman could wish for—a new-found family, the hard-earned respect of her peers in the corporate world, loyal friends, and an exciting lover.

Marco Willis is a spy. Tall, dark, handsome, and oh-so-virile, he's long been accustomed to bedding women and securing information while between the sheets. But Sophie is unlike any woman he's ever known. With her open, warm, and loving nature she not only gains Marco's trust, she captures his heart. But is there more to Lady Donovan than meets the eye?

When a series of terrifying events threatens Sophie's life, things really begin to heat up. Marco, the man she's grown to love, is determined to protect her at all costs. How can he hope to win, though, when his opponent is a dead man, and his only weapons are Sophie's secret past and a bunch of buried memories? In Flames—a scorching hot read that you won't be able to put down.

Here's her story:

"One morning I woke up with an urgent thought on my mind—if I didn't start writing I'd never realize my dream of publishing a book. I think the stars were aligned that week because I came across an advertisement for a romance writing course and also a magazine article about Romance Writers of New Zealand. I believe in fate. I enrolled for the course, sent off my check to join RWNZ and started writing my first book. I didn't plot or plan but instead took everything I liked, tossed it together and started to ferment a story. My plot ingredients included New Zealand, romance, rugby, aromatherapy, mystery, stalkers and a dash of chocolate. Playing to Win is the result. Thrilled to finish, I immediately sent off my story and waited impatiently for my contract. I was crushed when I received a rejection. However, this story does have a happy ending. I sat down and wrote more stories, attended conferences and networked on the web. I learned about editing and rewrites, I submitted this story and others to publishers. Iworked really hard and fate, along with a determination to follow my dreams, won through. "

Shelley writes tales of mayhem and murder with a liberal sprinkling of bodies. Shelley also writes hot paranormal and contemporary tales for Ellora's Cave. You can visit Shelley to learn more about her books at her website or blog and also at MySpace.

Website: http://www.shelleymunro.com
Blog: http://www.shelleymunro.com/blog
MySpace: http://www.myspace.com/shelleymunro

Here's a blurb from her book, Playing to Win

Professional rugby player Lane Gerrard is used to women throwing themselves at him, but a scurrilous tabloid article naming him as father of a child sends his temper soaring. The woman he confronts doesn't fit the blackmailer profile. Kate Alexander is attractive with an enchanting innocence, enticing. A total stranger. Her feistiness draws his unwilling admiration, but the child…he is the image of Lane.

Kate can't deny her son's similarity to the sexy man at her door but no way will she hand him over without a fight. Kate doesn't possess money but she can shower her son with love. With public speculation rife, Kate reluctantly works with Lane to discover the truth. They grow closer as distrust slowly turns to mutual fascination, but the tabloid articles bring out a stalker. Mild pranks escalate into danger, and suddenly Lane realizes Kate is a woman he could love. With Kate and her son, he could have a family. Now, with his heart on the line, this is one game he's playing to win.

We were struggling unpublished authors together, and sold our first books at about the same time. With every book she writes, I find out more and more about her ...

Here's Maggie in her own words:

I used to say I wore different hats at different times, but it goes deeper than that. When I’m in Mom-mode or wife-mode, I’m completely immersed in my family. When I’m writing romances and mysteries, I am in author-mode. I get a tunnel-vision that doesn’t include meals or appointments or sunshine. My reporter persona puts me in another zone. Every week I have editorial deadlines for a weekly newspaper in coastal Georgia, and when I’m in reporter-mode I become so absorbed by my articles that they crowd out the stories in my head.

That kind of total absorption, of soaking up everything around you, until you become integrated in the surroundings is a plus for a writer, but it plays hell with schedules and real life events. I had lists for everything until I realized that the important things always got done. Now I follow this simple prioritization scheme: family, books, job, everything else. Somehow it all works out.

My first book, House of Lies, came out in 2007. That romantic suspense featured a bird watcher and an ex-CIA agent. My second romantic suspense, No Second Chance, was just released as an ebook and will come out in print February 29, 2008. I have a mystery which will come out in hard cover from Five Star in June 2008. In For A Penny features a divorcee whose errant golf ball lands on a dead banker. Be sure and visit my website for more information about me and my books, www.maggietoussaint.com. Also, my blogs are consolidated at www.myspace.com/maggietoussaint .

My inspiration for No Second Chance came about this way .... once when I was a kid, I snuck into my cousin’s horse pasture and hopped on her pony. I rode him bareback all over the field – no saddle and no bridle - galloping randomly through knee-high grass. When my daughter became interested in horses, I understood completely what it was like to be mad for horses. Later still, my husband and I found ourselves with a horse in need of a special home. We found a place for him where he could be used as a therapy horse for chronically ill children. That experience got me to thinking about horses no one wanted, and I learned of the great things Day’s End Farm Horse Rescue does. A portion of the proceeds from this book will benefit this worthy cause. Check them out at www.defhr.org.

Here's the blurb for No Second Chance, my 'horse' book:

Hope Farrier rescues unwanted horses, but she’s saddled with debt. Without help she’ll lose Second Chance Farm, the first home she’s ever known. An endowment brings the promise of future relief and the presence of shrewd business manager, Devlin Temple.

Trouble is Devlin has his dreamy blue eyes on more than her bottom line.

Playboy Devlin Temple lays a trap for the thief that’s fleecing his company. When his cousin sets his cap for Devlin’s job, Devlin needs Hope’s help to secure the CEO position. In her arms he finds the solace he craves, but their blossoming romance prompts the thief to raise the stakes.

Will Devlin and Hope pay the ultimate price for love?

Here's a link to an excerpt of No Second Chance: http://www.maggietoussaint.com/no_secondchance.html

Enjoy!

Thin Ice is a 2007 New Jersey Romance Writers Golden Leaf Award winner, a 2007 EPPIE finalist, and a nominee for Best Romance of 2007 at Long and Short Reviews. Her next release, a re-release of her first novel, Ashton’s Secret, a murder mystery romance, will be available from The Wild Rose Press in 2008.

Liana is a member of Romance Writers of America, the Washington Romance Writers, and Pennwriters, Inc. In 1998, she won the Pennwriters Meritorious Service Award. You can reach her at www.lianalaverentz.com.

Here's the BLURB for JAKE'S RETURN:

The last person small town bad boy Jacob Donovan expects to find when he returns home in disgrace after serving time is Rebecca Reed, head librarian. Rebecca had always had much bigger ambitions. Jake hadn’t wanted to stand in her way, so after one night of passion with his former best friend, he’d hit the open road.

Rebecca refuses to believe Jake is guilty of murder. The boy who’d been her friend and protector when they were town outcasts together could never
have killed a woman. Not to mention the tender, loving man who’d given her their daughter, Katie.

But who is Jake now? That’s what everyone wants to know, including the town council chairman, who is determined to send Jake back to prison, by any
means available.

Jake’s been running from love for all of his life. Will he find the courage to defeat his demons and stay this time?

Duh. I forgot. You may not know me.

I'm J L Wilson, I live in Minnesota, and I write mysteries for Wild Rose Press and romantic suspense for Cerridwen.

I've got 4 books out so far (see my book list) and 4 more coming out this year (2008).

I work full-time for a Big Software Company that's headquartered on the Left Coast (no, not the one in Redmond, the other one). I'm a writer, documenting software and software tools. It's pretty arcane work, but I enjoy it. In my spare time, I write fiction, which really isn't that far removed from technical writing, if you think about it.

Check out my website for my bio and other details (http://www.jayellwilson.com). I keep it up-to-date on the latest happenings.

So that's me. Next week, you'll start meeting some of my writing buddies. Until then ... stay warm!

<msn:type>blogentry</msn:type><live:type>blogentry</live:type><live:typelabel>Blog entry</live:typelabel>

<dcterms:modified>2008-01-14T12:35:41Z</dcterms:modified>

Meet the Author Monday

I'm going to start a new practice ofintroducing new authors here on Monday.

Why? you ask. I mean, who knows if anyone is even reading this blog, much less caring what I write? Right?

I personally think the same could be said of any blog ... we are people shouting into a vacuum, aren't we? Perhaps some have some 'face time' with readers, but others ... who knows?

I'm doing it because I think there' s a lot of writers out there who are very good but who will never get recognition because it's hard to get the word out about their work.

So I'm going to do my little bit to change that. Stay tuned for "Meet the Author Monday".

<msn:type>blogentry</msn:type><live:type>blogentry</live:type><live:typelabel>Blog entry</live:typelabel>

<dcterms:modified>2008-01-07T11:10:14Z</dcterms:modified>

Sunlight is a mixed blessing ....

I went outside a few minutes ago to throw feed down for the wild turkeys. It's a bright, snow-sun day here in Minnesota. The sky is so blue it looks fake and the snow is all crispy and white.

But I realized that 'sun' = cold, too. I mean, I've always known this. I grew up in the Midwest and know these things.

But it's below zero today with a bit of a wind. With a blanket of clouds, we'd be ten degrees warmer, but because it's all clear, it's all cold.

Still nice, though. And funny to watch the turkeys as they run away ... have you ever seen a 4' tall turkey try to run through hip-deep snow (hip-deep on a turkey, that is). It's a funny sight!

<img
